Medical Weight Management Program​

Still Struggling With Excess Weight? We May Have the Solution

If you have been unsuccessful in past attempts to lose a significant amount of weight, the Baylor Scott & White Health Nutrition and Weight Management Center may help you finally shed those hard-to-lose pounds and achieve your weight loss goal.

The Nutrition and Weight Management Center (NWMC) at Baylor Scott & White Health has a 12-week comprehensive, multidisciplinary program called the Medical Weight Management Program. With classes beginning in January at locations in Austin, Dallas and Temple, this program is designed to coach lifestyle and nutrition changes, assist with healthy weight loss and weight management and guide participants throughout the process of developing a healthier you.

The criteria for participation

To enroll in the program, prospective participants must meet the criteria below and schedule a visit with a NWMC physician and registered dietitian.

Medical Weight Management Program Criteria

  • BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater OR BMI of 27 or greater with obesity-related comorbidity—see a calculator to estimate your BMI
  • Commitment to personal lifestyle changes for better health and weight loss
  • Age 18 or older

The 12-week program

After acceptance into the program, participants will begin the 12-week cycle, which includes:

  • Twelve sessions led by a certified lifestyle coach, featuring a specific topic to impact nutrition and lifestyle changes. Special speakers may also be invited to lead/facilitate sessions.

    Topics include:
    • Basic principles of healthy eating
    • Tips and tools to identify high-calorie and high-fat foods
    • Exercise principles
    • Problem-solving techniques for changing behavior
    • Taking charge of your environment
    • Strategies for dining out
    • Making social cues work for you
    • Ways to stay motivated
    • Strategies for long-term success
  • Group and individual lifestyle support throughout the program

The cost

The NWMC program is pre-approved for medical visits by Scott & White Health Plan as "in network" but usual deductibles and copays will apply, according to the enrollee's plan.

The initial medical assessment, any follow-up medical appointment(s) and, if indicated, individual consultation with a behavioral health specialist will be billed to the employee's insurance plan.

The Medical Weight Management Program is available at a discounted rate of $90 per individual for Baylor Scott & White Health employees, spouses and adult dependents. To be eligible for the employee discounted rate, employees, spouses and adult dependents must be:

  • Enrolled in Thrive (employees, spouses and adult dependents)
  • Enrolled in Scott & White Health Plan (employees, spouses and adult dependents)

Payment may be made by cash, check, and credit card.

If interested in the Medical Weight Management Program, you are encouraged to schedule your appointment now with the NWMC physician as class space is limited. After completing the physician visit and being accepted into the program, you will enroll in a 12-week group class at one of the following locations.

Program Physician Daniel Steffy, MD

Dr. Steffy is board certified in family medicine and integrative holistic medicine. He manages chronic diseases throughout a patient's weight loss journey including medication changes for diabetes, thyroid and blood pressure.

  • Tuesdays (starting in January) at 4:30 p.m.
  • Additional classes will be added as needed

Program Physician Tonia Vinton, MD

Dr. Vinton is a physician on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. She is board-certified in both internal medicine and obesity medicine.

Appointments with the physician and registered dietitian are available Wednesday afternoons between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Program Physician Catherine McNeal, MD

Dr. McNeal is a clinician-researcher with a focus in preventive cardiology in both children and adults with an emphasis on primary and secondary prevention treatment of cardiovascular risk factors including obesity and associated risk factors in adults and children. She is on staff with the Cardiology Department at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Appointments with the physician and registered dietitian are available Wednesday afternoons between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Times may change due to demand of participants and staff schedules.
