Leaves of Absence​​​

​​​We believe leaves are an important way to show our appreciation for your hard work and dedication. Plus, we support your legal rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The Baylor Scott & White Absence Center handles all the details and guides you and your employee through the process.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

FMLA entitles you to job protection by allowing you to take 12 weeks of leave because of the birth or adoption of a child; to care for your spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition; to care for your own serious health condition; or to deal with problems related to the military deployment of your spouse, child or parent. It also lets you take up to 26 weeks of leave to care for an ill or injured member of the military.

If you've worked with us for at least 12 continuous months and have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12-month period before the start of your leave, you're eligible for FMLA. Military leave of absence

We comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act—USERRA—and applicable state laws. We’ll make sure you have all the rights these laws provide while you’re on an approved leave of absence. Non-medical personal leaves of absence

During your employment, you may need to take extended time away from work for personal reasons beyond being sick or injured. In these cases, you can apply for a personal leave of absence. You’re eligible to be considered for a personal leave of up to 90 consecutive days:

        • You’ve worked with us for 12 continuous months
        • You’re planning to return to your job
        • Your absence won’t have a negative impact on operations
        • You’re not a temporary or PRN employee
        • Your leave will last more than 14 consecutive calendar days

Bereavement leave

If you’re a part-time or full-time employee, we provide up to three paid days off (up to 36 hours depending on your authorized daily work hours) to arrange and/or attend a funeral for eligible relatives. The time allotted does not count towards your PTO. You can request bereavement leave for up to two events a year. The relatives covered are spouse, child, stepchild, parent, stepparent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law and daughter-in-law. Additionally, your supervisor may give you approval to take PTO for the funerals of other relatives and friends. If you don’t have PTO hours available, your time off will be unpaid. 

The loss of a loved one is an emotional time that can make it hard to think clearly. You and your family may feel overwhelmed by legal paperwork and financial decisions. That’s why we offer life planning services available to Cigna life and AD&D insurance beneficiaries. The services include financial and legal support and grief counseling. Jury duty

We also pay you for the scheduled work hours you miss while serving on a jury up to 30 calendar days. If you appear in court on our behalf, we’ll pay you for your time as hours worked. To learn more about jury duty and court appearance pay, visit the Policy and Procedure Library.

Parental leave

PTO helps parents foster the health, care and wellbeing of newborn and adopted children. Remember that you have to purchase short-term disability to receive parental leave. If you don’t, you’ll have to use up your available PTO and then request unpaid time off. More information about parental leave is available in the Health & Welfare Benefits Summary Plan Document on page 176​​.

You must have purchased short-term disability benefits to receive the following:

        • Maternity leave: Maternity leave begins on the eight calendar day after birth and continues for up to five weeks. During maternity leave, you’ll receive 100% of your base salary.
        • Non-birthing parental leave: The non-birthing parental leave referenced above is for the parent of a newborn. The non-birthing parent can pick any two weeks within 12 months of their child’s birth to take parental leave. The paid leave will start on the eighth calendar day after the last day worked and continue up to one week. During non-birthing parental leave, you'll receive 100% of your base salary.
        • Adoption leave: Adoption leave beings on the eighth calendar day after your last day worked and continues up to three weeks. During adoption leave, you’ll receive 100% of your base salary.

​​​​The Absence Center

The Absence Center administers FMLA leaves, non-FMLA medical leaves, non-medical personal leaves and short-term disability. When you need to take one of these leaves, an Absence Center specialist will walk you through the entire process. Bereavement leave and jury duty leave should be requested directly from your supervisor. More information is available by calling 844-511-5762, Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT.
