Medical Weight Management Program​​​

Struggling With Excess Weight? We May Have the Solution

If you have been unsuccessful in past attempts to lose weight, the Baylor Scott & White Health Nutrition and Weight Management Center (NWMC) is here to help.  NWMC is an exciting resource for individuals who need to lose weight and want to live a healthier life.

Physician Led:

        • You will meet one-on-one with an American Board of Obesity Medicine certified physician to do a comprehensive review of you
        • Together you will develop a plan to overcome the challenges you face with your weight
        • Plans may include labs, sleep testing, medication changes, and referral(s) to Nutrition or Psychology, as needed
        • Referral for the 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance class (see below) may also be placed, as appropriate. As a benefit to eligible Baylor Scott & White employees, the 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance class is offered at a substantial discounted cost.

The Nutrition and Weight Management Center (NWMC) at Baylor Scott & White Health offers the 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance class as part of the comprehensive, multidisciplinary program called the Medical Weight Management Program.

With new Group Lifestyle Balance classes beginning in January at locations in Austin/Round Rock and Dallas, the 12-week class is designed to: 1) provide coaching for lifestyle and nutrition changes, 2) assist with healthy weight loss and weight management, and 3) guide participants throughout the process of developing a healthier you.​


The Criteria for Participation

To enroll in the program, prospective participants must meet the criteria below and schedule a visit with a NWMC physician.


Medical Weight Management Program Criteria

  • BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater OR BMI of 27 or greater with obesity-related comorbidity—see a calculator to estimate your BMI
  • ​Age 18 or older
  • Complete initial medical visit to obtain medical approval for program
  • Commitment to personal lifestyle changes for better health and weight loss


The 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance Class

At the initial medical visit, the NWMC physician will assess the participant's readiness to participate in the 12-week class. Upon medical approval, our staff will coordinate your enrollment for a 12-week class, which includes:​

      • ​​​One-on-one visit with Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for individual lifestyle support.
      • Twelve sessions in the Group Lifestyle Balance class, led by a certified lifestyle coach. Each session focuses on a specific topic for nutrition and/or lifestyle changes for weight loss. Special speakers may be invited to lead/facilitate sessions.
      • Group and individual lifestyle support throughout the program

Session topics include:

      • Basic principles of healthy eating
      • Tips and tools to identify high-calorie and high-fat foods
      • Exercise principles
      • Problem-solving techniques for changing behavior
      • Taking charge of your environment
      • Strategies for dining out
      • Making social cues work for you
      • Ways to stay motivated
      • Strategies for long-term success

​The Cost

The NWMC program is pre-approved for medical visits by Scott and White Health Plan as "in network" but usual deductibles and copays will apply, according to the enrollee's plan. The initial medical assessment, any follow-up medical appointment(s) and, if indicated, individual consultation with a behavioral health specialist will be billed to the employee's insurance plan.


The total price for the 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance class, class supplies, and nutrition visit with the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is available to eligible Baylor Scott & White employees, spouses, and adult dependents for a discounted rate of $180 per individual. To be eligible for the employee discounted rate, employees, spouses and adult dependents must be:


      • Enrolled in Thrive (employees, spouses and adult dependents)
      • Enrolled in Scott and White Health Plan (employees, spouses and adult dependents)

Payment may be made by cash, check, and/or credit card. Payment plan is available. Standard pricing will apply to employees who do not qualify for the discounted rate.

 

If interested in the 12-week Group Lifestyle Balance class you are encouraged to schedule your appointment now with the NWMC physician, as class space is limited. After completing the physician visit and being accepted into the Medical Weight Management Program, you may enroll in a 12-week group class at one of the following locations.

Program Physician Daniel Steffy, MD

Dr. Steffy is board certified in family medicine and integrative holistic medicine. He manages chronic diseases throughout a patient's weight loss journey including medication changes for diabetes, thyroid and blood pressure.

  • Thursdays (starting in January) from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
  • Additional classes will be added as needed

Program Physician Tonia Vinton, MD

Dr. Vinton is a physician on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. She is board-certified in both internal medicine and obesity medicine.
